VERY Beginners Sewing Class

For those who have never ever sewed before

Have you ever wanted to learn how to sew, maybe craft a piece you can wear with pride? This is the class for you! Learn from the start how to select a pattern and the material to make you custom piece. Join us for for an afternoon of creativity and fun. We sew look forward to seeing you there. 

What you will learn:

* How to use a machine and actually thread that dang needle.
* How to use the foot pedal and move your fabric in time with it. (Those who do not, bunch and knot their stitches)
* How to pick your needle and make your first stitches.
* Start to learn how to make the machine work for YOU so all of your future projects are fun and you know how to handle hiccups.

PST: You can register for a Sew Buddy too and bring them with you!


Machine Sewing: Level 1

Students will start a specific project with instructor guidance. Topics covered: choosing patterns, gauging size, fabric appropriateness, and specialty needles/stitches.

Depending on project complexity, students may need to enroll in Open Sewing Hours to complete their project.

Need a little time to work on your project? Well, come on over!


Join other sewing enthusiasts and take advantage of their 
experience.
Finish up an old project or get started on something new, or just do some mending.
We have machines available or you can bring your own.
The cost? A mere $10/person/hour.

Please phone 607-591-9652 by the previous Saturday at 3pm to reserve a space at the table and/or a machine!  First come, first served. Non-reservations are not guaranteed to be seated. Hours beyond 1-4 pm on Sundays are not available.

Create Your Own Stocking!

*please note that the stocking pictured is a style sample. Students will create stockings from available materials.

Students will learn to use a sewing machine to make their own stocking to hang by the chimney with care.

Bring your own materials for a class discount, or select from available materials provided by Magpie.

Bring Your Own Machine  (BYOM)

Beginners, don’t fear your machine; bring it to Magpie and we’ll show you how to use it. We will review how your machine works, threading, stitches, and tensions. *Machines must have maintained within 1 year of class for best performance. Ask us for maintenance details.  $25  3:30-5:00pm  Saturdays December 3, 17 January 21

All classes and Open Sewing Hours are by reservation only.   Minimum registration of 4 students required to hold classes.  Registrants will be informed of cancellations via email or phone.

Have some worn or torn clothes that you just can’t bear to throw away? Join Cortland Makerspace and Stacey from Magpie as we turn those old clothes (or use some of the provided items for a small donation) into something new using “upcycling”! Bring your own clothes or, for a nominal donation, use fabrics brought in by Stacey herself. The class is free & open to the public.
